LOUDONVILLE, NY - Student athletes and coaches from both the Siena Men’s and Women’s basketball teams participated in Siena Athletics’ “Saints in the Community” program when they took part in Siena College National Grid Foundation’s “Hoops for the Stars” initiative.
The first part of the program was supposed to happen when the schoolchildren visited Siena College campus to attend the women’s basketball Kid’s Day game on Jan. 4. However, bad weather conditions prevented schools from making the trip, but all schools received a voucher for the schoolchildren to attend any remaining women’s basketball games at the Alumni Recreation Center.
The Saints visited four schools Monday, attending Central Park Middle School and Van Corlaer Elementary School in Schenectady, Voorheesville Elementary in Voorheesville and Schoharie Elementary in Schoharie. Student athletes preached the importance of hard work and strong academics while also interacting with students through games and drills. The Saints also discussed good sportsmanship, eating healthy and respecting others to show all the different sides it takes to be not only a Division I athlete, but a good person as well. At the conclusion of the visits, the Saints took time to sign autographs and presented students with some special Siena Saints memorabilia.
