HEMPSTEAD, NY - With Deja Rawls scoring eight points in the final 1:15, Siena Women's Basketball was able to hold off Hofstra 70-60 to end their three-game road trip 2-1. The Saints improved to 4-4 on the season and sit second in the league standings behind Quinnipiac.
Maddie Sims came off the bench and scored a team-high 15 points for Siena (4-4), just one shy of tying her career record, while she grabbed eight board. Aaliyah Jones tallied 13 points and hit 3-4 from behind the arc. Deja Rawls and Sabrina Piper both recorded 11 points, with eight of Rawls' 11 coming in the final 1:15.
E'Lexus Davis hit a game-high 18 points for Hofstra (4-4). Ashunae Durant, who has been named to the Katrina McClain Preseason watch list, notched a double-double with 10 points and 14 rebounds.
Early in the final frame, Hofstra outscored the Saints 12-7, but Siena remained ahead 55-50. The Pride then went on a 9-0 run to take a 56-55 lead. It was an exhange of points between the two teams, but Siena forced three Pride turnovers and drained five of their six field goals to go ahead 62-58. Rawls then came out strong at the charity stripe and hit six free throws down the stretch to win 70-60.
After leading 28-23 at the half, Hofstra was able to tie it all up at 30. Late in the third frame, Siena went on a 10-0 run to go up 42-33. The Saints dropped six of their last eight field goals and shot 53.3% from the field to lead 48-38 at the end of the frame, including a trey at the buzzer from Jones.
Siena held the Pride scoreless for three minutes throughout the second frame and remained ahead 24-16. The Saints caused six of Hofstra's 23 turnovers in the second frame to hold a slight 28-23 lead.
Siena came out strong and led 4-0 early on. The Saints held the Pride scoreless for 3:23 in the frame and led 9-2. Siena has averaged 15.1 points per game off of turnovers. In the first frame, the Saints caused six Hofstra turnovers and created that into five points.
Siena has averaged 11.9 second chance points on the season, while scoring 12 second chance points against the Pride. Siena's 15.1 average points off turnovers was matched with 19 points scored off of Hofstra turnovers.
Siena will return back to the Capital Region and host cross-town rival UAlbany in the frontend of the Albany Cup on Saturday, December 9. Tip-off with the Great Danes is set for 5 p.m.
